Old Pettson lives on a picturesque little farm and spends his days pottering around the house, fishing and trying to talk to his hens - to no avail. Actually he has everything an old man could wish for, but nevertheless he feels a bit lonely.
In order to provide him with some company his neighbour Beda Andersson hands him a small tomcat she found in the wilderness. After being slightly reluctant at first Pettson finally begins to care for the little tomcat. He calls him "Findus" and raises him on his farm.
When little Findus eventually starts to talk Pettson is absolutely delighted. Together they have great adventures and they become inseperately friends.
One day, Beda Andersson saves a rooster from being turned into soup. However, Beda has no space for the rooster, neither does she have any hens, so she asks Pettson to take care of him.
Pettson happely agrees. His hens are thrilled. Findus on the other hand is anything but thrilled. Because from now on it is the rooster who gets all the attention on the little farm - not just from the hens, but also from Pettson.
Findus worries that he may have lost his one and only friend Pettson to the rooster. But Findus decides to fight for his friendship and finally wins back Pettson's love.
